Fertility and Fertility Awareness
I am an Advanced Fertility Awareness Practitioner, and am accredited by Fertility UK www.fertilityuk.org to teach fertility awareness methods of family planning
Natural Family Planning means discovering the most fertile points of a woman’s cycle, and using that to either maximise or minimise the chances of pregnancy. I can help you do this, using as many indicators as possible, in combination. Advice on diet and lifestyle, and Acupuncture, can be part of this if you wish, together with the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
We would have an initial appointment with both partners, to review your cycle, and the signs of fertility, and this is followed by a monthly review appointment. This can be by phone, email or dropping in to see me. If you’re new to this method of family planning, the support can be given for up to a year.
Among the advantages of this method are that it can be used post-natally, and while breast-feeding. If your sperm are sub-optimal (but with good motility) this method can help with conception, enabling you to time intercourse to coincide with the most sperm-friendly cervical secretions.
NICE recommend intercourse every 2-3 days for couples trying to conceive, but the pressure of having to ‘perform’, combined with work, other children, and simply the pressure of trying to have a baby, can mean that it becomes a chore. Stress reduces the chances of conception, and couple can find themselves in a vicious cycle of trying and failing, month after month. With Natural Family Planning, timing sex for the optimal fertile window makes it a less stressful activity, and if necessary babysitters can be arranged!
Support for fertility treatment including IVF
If you’re having IVF or IUI fertility treatment, or have been given Clomid or similar, then Acupuncture can help to support your treatment. The choice of Acupuncture points will be based on the Chinese Medicine view of what type of person you are, and also the stage of your menstrual cycle.
During your treatment, Acupuncture points will be chosen to enhance egg production, or nourish uterine blood after implantation. The side effects of fertility treatments can be many and varied; thirst, night sweats, distended abdomen and mood swings are all common. Acupuncture can also be used to treat these problems if they arise.
During embryo transfer, research has suggested that a collection of points known as the German Protocol may increase success rates from 26.3% to 42.5%, but more research is needed to confirm these findings.
Additionally, the use of Acupuncture can help relax you, helping you feel calm, and raise the levels of the feel-good hormones, endorphins, in your system.
